Some background notes by Carolyn Golowka:

William Grant, Sr., was the son of John Grant and Catherine Britnell. His brother,
Henry Peter Grant, was a witness to this will as was McDaniel Atchison/Atchinson
who was married to Jane Grant, William's sister. John J. McCaw was court clerk
whose daughter, Celia Jane, married William Grant, Jr., Catherine and William
Grant's son. It is all in the family!!

Catherine W. Ferris, daughter of Joseph Ferris and Sarah Delashmen/Delashment, was
born December 11, 1799 and died September 23, 1856. She is buried in a cemetery in
Lowndesboro, Lowndes Co., AL whose name I do not know. Also buried in this
cemetery is Sarah Delashment/Delashment Ferris, born about 1774, died Sept. 27,
1860. I do not know the relationship to Elijah Delashment. Catherine's brother,
Mordicai D. Ferris is buried there as well. He was born Aug. 22, 1810 and died
Apr. 28, 1857. Other family members are in this cemetery as well.

About John Grant from rootsweb
Tue, 11 Apr 2000 03:05:06 -0400
This is in reply to Mr. Mallett's Chester County Grants message... I am researching my GRANT family in Fairfield Co SC. I always wonder if the Fairfield Co. GRANTS are connected to the Chester CO. GRANTS.  Here is some information on the Fairfield Co. Grants. If you see a connection please let me know. I am still working on verifying some of this... so please forgive any errors. ------------- John Grant (born c1745) He was in Rev. War and was listed as Col. John Grant in early SC census records. We only know the names of two of his 4 sons and none of his 5 daughters. The two sons we have names for are John and Randolph (born c.1774 SC). (Also, the elder John Grant may have had at least 2 brothers, Peter and James) Col. John Grant's son... John Grant (born C1770 and died 1840 in Lowndes Co AL) He married c 1796 in Chester Co. to Catherine Britnell (born c. 1785) Catherine Britnell was the daughter of Joseph Britnell and Christina Britnell. According to census and land records John Grant and Catherine Britnell lived in Fairfield Co from 1800 to 1834. He lived near his father Col. John Grant in 1800. During the 1830's and early 1840's John Grant and his mostly grown children and their families moved to Lowndes Co. Alabama (with the exception of his son William Grant who went to Carroll Co. MS in 1836 breifly, but then returned to Lowndes Co. AL by 1850) John Grant and Catherine had 9 children in this order: Joseph B. Grant born c.1798 SC, William Grant, Britnell Grant, John Grant, unknown female, Jane Grant, Christine Grant, Elizabeth Grant, Henry Peter Grant born 1818 SC) All of these children had families in Lowndes Co. AL, except Joseph Grant who never married and left his estate to his siblings in Lowndes Co. AL. ------------- The other son whose name we know of Col. John Grant is Randolph Grant. He lived next to his father in Fairfield in 1800 with a wife and 2 females under 10 years of age. Nothing else is known about him. There are alot of Grants missing!  Some surnames associated with this family in SC: Davis, Britnell, Gandy, Gregory, Farris, DeLashment, McCaw, Atchinson, Gill, Tidwell, Harrison, maybe Hines and Arledge.  *** Also looking for information on MINOR/MINER GRANT who bought some items at Thomas Hines estate sale c.1821 in Fairfield Co. SC.  Can anyone add any info or corrections to this?  Any info about the Chester Co. SC Grants would also be helpful. This may help to either tie into the Chester Co Grants or rule it out. I'd like to know how many GRANT families were in the old Camden District of SC. Thanks! Sarah

I am decended from William Grant Sr. and Catherine Farris's son Joseph Grant. He served in the Confederate Army as a private in Company C, 1st Alabama Infantry. From him I am decended from Joseph's oldest child Uriah Edward Grant. I forgot to mention that after the Civil War, Joseph moved from Lowndes County to Butler County near the small town of Daisy. Uriah appears to have only had one child who was Joe Frank Grant. Joe Frank had several daughters, the third of which is my great grandmother who maiden name was Leila Estelle Grant. She married my Great Grandfather Joe Vance Stokes and moved with him to Pulaski County Georgia (Which later became Bleckly) Joe Frank married Leila Estelle Heartsill the daughter of Abner Thomas Heartsill also a civil war veteran.
Uriah Edward Grant married Laura Palmer in Butler County. Joseph Grant married Clarkey Davis in Lowndes County Al, Feb. 22, 1849.

I do not have alot of dates because I live in Georgia and this information is hard to get over here.

I can not help you with Catherine Farris Grant's burial location. I too am looking for the burial places of all of my Grants especially Joseph Grant. I am a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterians and I really injoy visiting all of my civil war ancestors graves. So, let me now if you do find were she is buried at.

William Grant, Sr. the husband of Catherine Farris is the son of John Grant and Catherine Britnell of Fairfield County South Carolina. You can see in census for Joseph that it says he was born in South Carolina. Once agian no dates yet. John Grant appears in the 1800-1810 Fairfield census I beleave. No one know were he came from before then but he could be the son of John Grant and Elizabeth Fibling who living in Charleston District, St. Phillips Parish, South Carolina. They were married Feb 26, 1775. They did have a son named John but it is not proven that it is the same Johh Grant who is living in Fairfield County.

Ransom Meadows, son of William Meadows and Angeline-new information on Meadowlawn

MeadowlawnBobby Meadows has supplied up to date information on the Hagood- meadows mansion- I dare not go back and change anything on previous blogs because sometimes the old data in the way of fotos and documents disapears. So this will be the ultimate update on "Meadowlawn." The land was an Andrew Jackson land grant from 1815, but the house was not built till years later. It was bought in 1905 by the grandson of Ransom Meadows (the original Ransom) and not by his grandfather.

Susan hope you are doing well.
Back a few years ago I said there were records for the property that Meadowlawn is located on.  This is true, a descendant of William (Ransom’s son) has the land grant from Andrew Jackson on their wall.  This was misunderstood as saying Meadowlawn existed in 1815 which it did not it was built in 1853 , it was named Meadowlawn after 1900x, I have had to correct lots of people via email over the years because of this. Your blog is in need of updating.

Here are two important articles about the history of Meadowlawn.

"Meadowlawn", also known as the '"Hagood House", is an antebellum plantation mansion, built in the Greek revival style, in LowndsboroAlabamaUnited States. It is a contributing property to the Lowndesboro Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 12, 1973.[1]

[edit]History

The plantation of Meadowlawn was built in 1853 for Squire George Thomas (1797-1867). The house was later sold to Fort Williamson. In 1905 the home was sold to Ransom Meadows, born June 18, 1846, died February 2, 1940. He was the last surviving Confederate veteran in Lowndes County. His daughter, Aline Meadows, born February 16, 1880, died February 16, 1979, married Robert Bragg Hagood on April 3, 1907 in Lowndes County, Alabama. It is to this couple that Ransom Meadows deeded the house. To honor her father, Mrs. Hagood renamed the house "Meadowlawn." She lived in the house until her death at age 99. The house still remains in the Hagood family today.[2]

[edit]Description
