Chapter 2 Children, grandchildren and great grandchildren

First I would like to welcome all additions/corrections which anyone may have. Contact susanaldridge2000@yahoo.de Second to thank my relatives in Alabama -Nellie Sellers Newton and especially Billy Parker who first helped me with rudiments they had received from family at reunions, including Fred Perkins, deceased. Fred was the son of Russell Isaiah Perkins about whom there is a great story which Billy sent me which I have uploaded at http://robert-hardy-sc-to-alabama.blogspot.com/ Also thanks to Cindy Stamps whose great research on the ground in Alabama has opened up the Browning family to inspection for me. There are many documents I have yet to upload- especially the ones acquired during a DAR application for my daughter on her John Hardy application at http://john-hardy-ann-williams-family.blogspot.com/
Susan Millicent Taylor Aldridge

This is the original home Ransom built after he settled in Loundesboro, later Lowndesboro, Hayneville PO, Lowndes Co. Alabama, and where at least half of his children first saw the light of the world. It is the house where my children´s great great great grandmother lived after her father Stephen died. After Ransom lost his three oldest boys Steve, Tom and Gerry to Malaria or Yellow fever, he chose to let his son William live in his mansion and leave Loundesboro to move to a less swampy northern county-Tallapoosa. He did this before William married Angeline McClendon. William and Angeline appear in the 1860 census in this house with his sister Martha D."Patsy" Farris and her husband Samuel. I am curious to know who the fabulously rich man is who is living in the house with them- Edmund Harrison. His wife is an Irvin born in SC- a Farris relation? She and Samuel Farris are both born in South Carolina. There is a woman of her age in Isham´s house in 1830. Ransom´s son William Meadows has no real estate 1850-1860 although he is living in his father Ransom´s house in these years. Edmund Harrison in the house has a real estate amount listed, but I wonder how that works when he himself is not the head of the house he is living in. Does he list what he owns in business at some other location? He is a commissions merchant and I guess that means Cotton Merchant.

Children or grandchildren of those who survived Ransom and Sarah to be mentioned in court papers concerning the widow´s allotment when Ranson´s wife Sarah Stephens died. Michal Farmer says that because Ransom was so rich, there must be numerous undiscovered papers in the court house which may eventually lead to new names:

i. Unknown Meadows There may be a first child born late 1808 or in early 1809 but this child left no survivors by 1873. May Meadows was supposed to have been a daughter.

ii. Mary Meadows, born b. 13 Oct 1810 (Odum family Bible) in Georgia, married 23 August 1836-at age 26. Mary must have enjoyed living at home since most girls were married with 4 children by age 26.). She must also have been a great help to her parents. Marriage license at Lowndes Co. Courthouse is to Robert L. Dick. He was born1810 GA, went to AL in the 1830's (land records). Their first two children, Martha Jane and Sarah Frances were born in AL. They moved to Union Parish, LA sometime prior to the birth of Ransom Meadows Dick who was born Sept. 24, 1840 in Union Parish. . In 1839, Union Parish was created from Ouachita. Robert acquired land in Union Parish, farmed and was somewhat influential in the affairs of Union Parish. He served on a Police Jury several times and was responsible for directing the placement of several roads and bridges in the Parish. Robert was a substantial slave owner according to slave schedules in the county. Family stories (principally from Robert L. Dick's grandson, Robert Ransom Dick who lived and died in AL) is that Robert L. left his family sometime prior to 1860, giving his wife thousands of dollars in gold and 30 slaves to sustain herself and the children. He was in Zandt County, Tx, 1860, showing R.L. Dick, age 51, born GA, listed with William Lauderdale family. Martha and Sarah stayed in Union Parish with their hisbands, but Mary took her young son, Ransom Meadows Dick back to AL to live near her Meadows family. Since Martha Jane was the last to marry 20 JAN 1857 to Lanier Boatright, in Ark but they have their first child in Union Parish in 1858, it would seem most logical that Mary Meadows left after the baby was born in 1858. by 1860 she is in Tallapoosa with her father

This foto must have been taken of Mary while she was living with her son Ransom Meadows Dick in AL. He was in Etowah, AL in 1880. Etowah used to be part of the old Coosa territory and Coosa Co. I am not familiar with dress styles to know when it was taken. Maybe one of you know. She looks to be 80, so it would be at least 1890?

“Ms Aldridge, thank you so much for the information you posted and emailed about the Meadows/Dick families. There is a lot of information out there that needs to be shared so our genealogies can be made more accurate but we have to wait until it falls into our lap. I don't know if you are familiar with the Union Parish genweb site but here is the link just in case:

http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Eusgenweb/la/union.htm

“It is by far the best parish/county website I have ever seen! I have posted a picture of Sarah Dick and B. W. Odom that I got from one of B. W.'s descendants in Oklahoma. I am also attaching a photo of Mary Meadows Dick that I got there. I'm pretty sure they had a picture of Ransom Dick but if I copied it (and I'm almost positive I did) it was on a hard drive that I reformatted last weekend. (Now I wonder what other photos I lost.)

“My first impression of Mary Meadows from this picture was that she was part Indian although the existence of Indian blood in the family has never been mentioned by any of B. W.'s descendants that I have talked to. It appears that her mother must have been Indian so it wasn't only her brothers who married Creek Indian girls. You can vaguely see that it says she was born in Georgia in 1810.

“The Odom DNA project has revealed that Benjamin Wellington Odom was not one of the alleged four brothers who settled in Union Parish, LA and there is a question about one of the other three. Do you have any tidbit of information about BW Odom that you could share? It doesn't matter how unimportant it may seem. Bruce Odum

Mary remarried to a Sanders by the 1860 Tallapoosa Census living with her father Ransom Meadows and has $5000 which may be that thousands of dollars in gold Robert L Dick purported to have given Mary before he left for Texas. Who would want to take 5000 in gold to would country like Texas? Traveling back to Alabama, Mary would have had the her slaves to help protect her. But there must have been at least one white male to protect them all. Afterall slaves were subject to be stolen as well. Robert L. and Mary have only 3 slaves in 1850 and his worth is only 600 dollars. So he must have stayed a few years to have built enough money to give her 1000s in gold. Not to say people told the truth to all men who were enumerators. I mean you would not tell a man you have 5000 in gold under your bed, would you? Back in civilized Fish Pond, no one worried I suppose. Anyway he may have had a good crop of cotton for a few years and Robert gave Mary the proceeds-probably after the two girls married.

Mary´s 1st child Martha Jane married Lanier Boatright 20 JAN 1857 in El Dorado, Union Co., AR. Lanier died 10 SEP 1862 in Union Parish, LA 4 months after enrolling in Co H, 31st Louisiana Infantry.

Lanier’s father Powhatan b.13 JUL 1790 in Amherst Co., VA seems to have been quite a character. He came from VA to Arkansas and stayed there awhile including enlisting 21 SEP 1824 Commissioned as 1st Lt, Arkansas State Militia. 1830 he was in the Census for Claiborne, LA, and on 14 OCT 1835 purchased land near Calhoun, LA and on 3 NOV 1836 Purchased land at Zion Hill, LA. August 1845, Powhatan Boatright was on a committee of members of the Zion Hill Baptist Church in Union Parish LA to select a sight for the construction of a new church building. This committee reported their choice in September 1845. The church and cemetery are located near Powhatan's farm. Powhatan Boatright had five sons to loose their lives in southern rebellion.

Powhatan Boatright did marry Lucy Utley in 1815, but the next year she published a newspaper ad indicating that he had abandoned her. She stated that she would not be responsible for his debts and warned other women to beware of him. We do not know whether Boatright was delayed on an extended trip away from home and eventually returned to Lucy in Kentucky and then took her with him to Arkansas, OR if he had or actually abandoned her for good and already moved west of the Mississippi River into what was then Arkansas Territory.”Odum contact-timothydhudson@hotmail.com )

This is a painting put together from fotos, after the death of Benjamin ODUM. Sarah is looking older as if the painting was made from a young likeness of Benjamin and an older one of Sarah Frances, looking resigned, tired and worn out. Both girls´ husbands died shortly after entering the ranks in the Civil War. Both being released to come home and die after being injured.

What happened to father Robert L. Dick?

The family Robert L. Dick is staying with in Texas in 1860–the head of household was born in Down Co Ireland and so was James Dick of Georgia. I have to suspect this William Lauderdale was some kind of kinsman. In the 1860 census William Lauderdale b. 20 JAN 1808 children are all b. in LA. His wife is Eliza Ann FEAZLE born 09 FEB 1832 in LA OUACHITA PARISH and she was his second wife he married. 5 APR 1858 in TX HOPKINS CO. She died 17 MAR 1902 and is buried VARGA CEMETARY TX SAN SABA CO SAN SABA. She was first married to Charles R. Dennis 29 AUG 1850 in LA UNION PARISH house 538, so it looks like Robert L. Dick decided to accompany the Feazle family to Texas. Or to join them later. The earliest birth in Texas for the Feazel children is Dec 1855. The earliest marriage is Eliza Ann´s sister Arzula Mae FEAZLE on 16 DEC 1854 in TX BURNET Co.- Looks like the path is 1854 Burnet Co., 1858 Hopkins Co, 1860 Zandt Co. and finally San Saba Co. TEXAS. Robert Dick left in between fall of 1854 and spring of 1858 for Texas

Mary´s 3rd child Ransom Meadows Dick was born 24 September 1840 in Farmerville LA and served in the CSA. He enlisted Feb 1862 at Fish Pond, Alabama, Private 8th Reg Unit I Calvalry Remarks: Address 1907: Albertville, Alabama. Authority: Census Tax Assessor Marshall County 1907. He was discharged August 1865 Montgomery Authority: Census Tax Assessor Marshall County 1907.

He married Nancy Browning Bankston Coosa Co in 1865. She was the daughter of Nancy Browning Hardy Bankston who was the mother of John B. Hardy who married Elizabeth Jane Meadows. Nancy Browning Hardy Bankston was also the mother of Mary Ann Elizabeth Hardy who married Milous Meadows and she was the mother of Robert W. Hardy and William Allan Lansing Hardy who both married Mary Ann Elizabeth Meadows, daughter of Stephen Meadows. So 2 of Nancy Peebles Browning Hardy Bankston´s children married 2 of Ransom´s children and 3 of her children married 2 of his grandchildren .

Reminder of the complications and close neighbor and friend ties of Coosa and Tallapoosa marriages:

Ransom Middleton Meadows´s grandson and namesake, Ransom Meadows Dick, married Nancy Browning Bankston the half sister of Ransom Middleton Meadows´grandchild Mary A.E. Meadows` husbands Robert W. Hardy and William Allen Lansing Hardy. Also little Nancy was the sister in law to her half brother John B Hardy´s wife Elizabeth Meadows, d/0 of Ransom. Nancy was also the sister in law of her half sister Mary Ann Elizabeth Hardy´s husband Milous Meadows, s/o Ransom.

Obituary of Jane Irvin Harrison, 1864

Departed this life on the 26th day of March, 1864, in the 64th year of her age, Mrs. JANE HARRISON; wife of Col. Edmund Harrison, of Lowndes county, Alabama.

The simple announcement that another human being has left this scene of earthly activity and enjoyment for the Eternal World, may excite but little interest beyond the immediate circle in which she was especially known and loved. Particularly at such a time as this, when "The air is full of farewells to the dying, And mournings for the dead:"

When so many are winning for themselves an illustrious record on the pages of history, and signalizing their departure by deeds of heroic daring,-the fall of one here and there in the quiet walks of private life, may scarcely attract a passing notice. And yet, the narrow sphere of home may witness as pure and lofty a devotion as ever distinguished the field of battle, or the proudest and most conspicuous scenes of human achievement. True greatness, after all, consists in acting well our part, in performing our whole duty in the station allotted us by Providence. Measured by this standard, our departed friend deserves a higher meed of praise than can be awarded her in this brief tribute.

Mrs. Jane Harrison was born in Fairfield District, S.C. She removed to the State of Alabama in 1826 and on the 27th of May, 1827, was married to Col. Edmund Harrison with whom she lived most harmoniously and happy to the (can't make out) of her death (can't read) thirty seven years. In 1828 she connected herself with the Methodist Protestant Church in Lowndesboro, Ala. I find upon examining the Church record that her name, and that of her husband, were the first in the list of original Reformers in this place. No one understood more clearly than she the principles involved in bigotry, she yet maintained with characteristic firmness and fidelity her own conscientious convictions, and devoted herself zealously to the church of her choice.

We shall not attempt a minute analysis of her character, though it would readily admit it. Unlike that of most of her sex, it had more of the positive than passive and negative elements. There were certain salient, outstanding features which gave to it a somewhat masculine aspect, and yet not at the sacrifice of womanly decorum and modesty. She was distinguished by perfect transparency and candor of spirit - a frankness that spoke out its thoughts and feelings fully and freely. She scorned concealment and reserve, even so much of them as conventional intercourse and the rules of polite intercourse might seem to justify. If she had aught to say against any one, the offender was the first to hear it, no in the language of passion, but of bold and honest rebuke. Never was there a truer and more faithful friend, nor one who gathered around her warmer and more devoted attachments. This was evidenced by the many expressions of sorrow called forth by her death, and the unusually large concourse of persons that attended her obsequies.

By her strong mind and sound judgment she was not only able to manage her domestic affairs with discretion, but to render important service to her companion amid the multifarious cares of an exhaustive business. Such was her clear insight, into human nature, and her great practical forecast, that her counsel was of no small value to her husband in all his more important mercantile enterprises. In this respect she was a helpmeet indeed; not only manifesting in all times the tender, loving sympathy of a devoted wife, but, when the occasion called for it, acting the part of a judicious adviser and friend.

A life as protracted as hers, was of course not unattended with those vicissitudes which are the common allotment of humanity; and yet, few enjoyed more uninterruptedly the blessings of prosperity than the subject of this notice. Blessed with affluence - with a companion anxious in every way to gratify her wishes and minister to her comfort - surrounded with a group of devotedly affectionate children, and scarcely ever suffering herself from bodily disease or disability, - it is strange that life should have presented to her attractions that rendered the dissolution of its ties a severe trial, and cost her in the end a deep heart struggle?

But how wisely God disciplines his people for their great change. She who had so singularly escaped the hand of disease during a long lifetime was destined to close her pilgrimage by a lingering and painful illness. For many weary months she was confined to her bed or her chamber, suffering at times the most acute pain. To one of her active habits the continued confinement was irksome, and she would at times grow restless under it; but most earnestly did she desire to be fully resigned to the will of God - recognizing as she did the chastening of a Father's hand. I frequently conversed with her during her illness as to the purposes of the afflictive appointment, and her own experience under it. She frankly acknowledged that her greatest difficulty was in being reconciled to a separation from her family - always the devoted wife and mother. It was very evident, however, that she was learning obedience "by the things she endured." Her heart was gradually becoming more and more detached from earthly objects and she at last learned that (can't read line) infinitely wise and merciful God. It was to this consummation her Heavenly Father had been conducting her by a benevolent though painful process, and when it was reached the had that had pressed so log and so heavily upon her was lifted. Her constitution, always remarkable for its vital elasticity and force, rallied and regained somewhat its wonted activity. The interval of recovery was, however, a brief one. It but afforded her an opportunity to mingle awhile with her old friends, and exchange with them her last earthy greetings. A slight exposure brought on an attack of Pneumonia, which in a few days hurried her to the grave. Her sufferings were for the most part intense; but as opportunity afforded , she spoke calmly of her approaching departure, and of the future beyond the grave - expressing her humble but hopeful trust in the Savior of men - her resignation to the Divine Will, and her peaceful assurance of eternal life. Her last utterances indicated a spirit of deep concern for the spiritual welfare of her household. Calling them around her, she exhorted her companion, her children and her domestics, to meet her in Heaven; and the, without a struggle or a groan, fell sweetly asleep in the arms of Jesus.

"Blessed sleep!

From which none ever wake to weep."

The fragrance of a grateful honored memory lingers around her tomb. Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her."

Spouse 1: Stephens Meadows

Marriage Date: 29 Aug 1829
Marriage Place: Montgomery
Performed By: J. P.
Surety/Perf. Name: Jno. J. Simons

His daughter Mary Ann Elizabeth was born ca 1832 AL or GA. Family stories relate that he and his 2 brothers Tom and Gerry died with fever near Lowndesboro, causing his father to leave the lower swamp lands of Lowndes Co and seek north, moving to Tallapoosa Co across the river from the Hardy family in Nixburg, Coosa Co which he had known in Lowndes. Stephen´s only child was Mary Ann Elizabeth Meadows who married 1st Robert W. Hardy 28th Sept. 1848 and had 3 sons by him. After he died she married his older brother William Allan Lansing Hardy and had 10 more children. William A. L. Hardy farmed, owned a grist mill and was 1890 Post Master of Dollar Post office till 1894 when he probably died. His brother Richard took over in 1894. There is a Stephen Meadows who married 1830 Lavina Sharpe in Henry Co but I think that is another Meadows branch from SC.

John Richard Hardys grand. daughter, Dean "Miller" Jones comes to the Hardy reunion each year. Johnny married Mattie E Sellers. They had 2 children, Luzinka & Elbert. Several years ago, elbert came to the hardy reunion--he was living in Fla., I think, but he has died. We went to see Luzinka´s daughters 2 years ago. They live in Winston Co. AL. My mother often spoke of Luzinka. After Matties death Johnny R. married her cousin, Elmira Catherine Lambert. Elmira & Johnny had 7 children--one was Dean Jones´ mother. Dean said she lived most of her teen year with her g parents. Johnny & Elmira are buried in the Pine Grove Ceme. in Coosa Co. Johnnys head stone- b-1865 d-1930, Elmira- b-1878 d-1953. Photo Billy Parker "Hi Susan
This is a picture that I have on my wall.It is my mother, aunts, uncles, g.parents & g.g.parents. I look at it often & wandered if Etta was visiting the day the picture was taken now I know she was living with the Meharg. They are in front of Jousha & Didema´s home. I don't know the date but Etta Caladonia Hardy looks to be about 16 or 17 y/o. My mother Ella Belle Monarie MeGerg married at 16 y/o so she was maybe 14or 15 y/o.; Etta was 2 years older then mother PS; the Horse Stomp Park was part of his farm..

Far left is the great granddaughter of Stephen Meadows, Etta Caladonia Hardy born at Talledega Springs north of where her grandfather lived. She was the daughter of Stephen Ransom Hardy born 30 October 1862 in picture below. His sister Florence Didemia Hardy b. 8 Sep 1865, granddaughter of Stephen Meadows, is the woman holding the baby in back. Archibald´s grandfather was also named Archibald who lived in Raburn´s Creek, Laurens District, SC while he was fighting in the Rev. War:

MAHARG, ARCHIBALD, aged 71, and a resident of St. Clair County; private, S. C. Militia; enrolled on July 24, 1833, under act of Congress of June 7, 1832, payment to date from March 4, 1831; annual allowance, $35; sums received to date of publication of list $105. —Revolutionary Pension Roll, in Vol. xiv, Sen. Doc. 514, 23rd Cong., 1st sess., 1833-34.

Archibald ´s wife Sarah Elizabeth Perkins was also a descendant of a Rev. soldier. Her grandfather is:

FAVER, JOHN (1758-1846) served as a private 1779 at the battle of Kettle Creek and his name is on the roster of soldiers who participated in that battle. He is buried on his farm Limestone County, Alabama. Daughter: Mary Melissa Fever Christopher, born 1842, in Limestone County, Ala. She was the daughter by his third wife, Mahala Lee, born 1808.—D.A.R. Lineage Book, Vol. 45, p. 60, vol. 47, p. 450-51. http://www.archives.state.al.us/al_sldrs/m_list.html

About the foto-Mary´s son William L. Hardy died. 11 Dec 1898 but is not in the foto. He was buried in Unity Cemetery not far from the old home place at Nixburg in Coosa Co. If you drive north a couple miles from Nixburg (Equality is south of Nixburg), you come to a cross road - take a left. After about 4 miles you get to Rockford you take a right and go north thru Hanover to Stewartsville and take a left when you get there. This is a small road which takes you thru Weogufka (where the Hardys found brides and grooms in the Horse Stomp community) to Unity.. If you keep on going thru Unity, you come to Marble Valley and the only road there takes a sharp right to the north which leads to Talledega Springs over the County line. The Taledeg Springs area was a place the Hardys gravated to after their parents died. Stephen Ransom Hardý daughter was born near there in 1895. In 1900 census Spearman, Shelby Co Talledega Co is only across the river. Daniel Jackson Hardy live in Wilsonville northwest of Talledega Springs which seems to be in the middle of woods and must be not far from where Allen A,, John R. and Stephen R..lived—maybe there was a bridge across the river which devieds Talledega from Shelby Co. But it just looks like woods and river and streams. It must have been really private. Maybe Sam NEEDED that gun he has in the photo. Daniel Jackson Hardy is not in the foto. It is maybe summer 1898 or 1897. Stephen R., John R. and Allen A. were neighbors in the 1900 census for Spearman, Shelby Co., AL. Daniel Houston lived with Stephen R. and his 2 children son Willis and daughter Callie (Etta Caladonia), as well as with his new wife Emma Lowery. I have their marriage certificates which I had to get for DAR. Also a William Smith 18 lived with Allen. He was black, born Oct 1881 and was probably the black boy Stephen brought up as his own son, according to Nellie Sellers Newton. The boy may have been the grandson of a former slave of the Hardys. After William A.L. Hardy died, as well as Mary Ann Elizabeth Meadows, the homeplace in Coosa where maybe four or five of them had lived together must have been sold. Then three of the boys bought a place together in Shelby. The boys may have come up to Shelby to join Daniel Jackson Hardy who was living in Wilsonville, Shelby.

Photo fromDr. Harry Kinane of Stephen Ransom Hardy´s daughter in law-Lila ALLEY when she was young. She was born in Jefferson Co and lived in Elyton near the Shelby Co. line. She was the daughter of Tallulah Parthena C. (Lula) Sellers and probably Sims Alley. The Alleys and Sellers are neighbors in 1860 Elyton. Jefferson Co.AL. The Sellers were related to the Actons and Watkins families of Shelby. Lila lived in the house of Amanda Grace Sims Sellers and Lila´s grandmother Martha Morris Sellers. The family had come in a covered wagon thru Tennessee to madison Co AL and then to Shades Valley, Jefferson Co by about 1857. Tallulah´s father Henderson Sellers was drafted into the Rebellion, as his family called it, soon after moving to Alabama. He fought at Chickamauga and died in hospital. Henderson´s father was a Unionist and hid run away draftees in the woods. Willis HARDY married Lila Alley in 1909. See http://www.rootsweb.com/~scsparta/marthamorris.htm

Dear Susan,

As I've been re-reading your info from BLOG, that I printed out, YOU ask
the question: Is this Sarah H(arriet) "Tobe" Meadows daughter of Gilbert Middleton
Meadows, b. 11 SEP 1846 in Tallapoosa Co., AL? I looked in my album pages and found her.
She is daughter of above Gilbert M. Meadows. So I updated her page, from YOUR shared
information on husband Warren Justice and the couples children. Thank you!

Hoping your chickens and ducks are doing great, and YOU and your family
ALSO! Very quiet Memorial Day Holiday here yesterday. Our company,
(cousin of Hubby) did not come to visit overnight due to the rainy
weather, but only few rain showers here abouts. Earth is soggy.
Farmers are likely "happy"! LOL Exiting for breakfast, but just wanted
to let you know YOU are correct about Mrs. Warren Justice being daughter
of Gilbert......and actually she is sister of my Grandmother, Hixie Adella (Meadows) Richardson!
Love,
Cousin Bobbie in TX
P.S. Giving you "her" full name and nickname to boot!!

Hixie Adella Meadows and Benjamin Washington Richardson after they moved to Texas and built there an old style Southern house with a big porch --near the river next to rich bottom land in Sweeny, Brazoria, Texas on Hesema Road. They built an old style Alabama house with large center hallway and front veranda. There were 3 doors to the veranda. The left door went to a bedroom, as well as the right door. In the middle was the entrance door. In the hall way, the first doors right and left were naturally those bedrooms which went out to the porch. There were stairs going up to 2 bedrooms. The next doors right and left were left door the big eat-in kitchen and right door another bedroom.

Son of Gilbert and Hixie Adella´s brother Moses Sherill MEADOWS in Texas b. 14 FEB 1866 AL. I think he is visiting Hixie here. I wonder how he got there? It looks like the front door opens outwards instead of inwards which provides more security against breakins.

House to the left is the one William was living in when the 1850/1860 census was taken. His father Ransom left him this house to live in when William married and Ransom went north. In the 1850 census William shows no real estate ownership. Ransom moved to Tallapoosa County about 1842 and kept title to the house, so far as I understand.

Elias and Susan came to Texas after about 1853. As Susan's father died in 1855 and her mother followed in 1862, it is probable they came during that time- ! My gggrandfather Elias Meadows came to Moscow, Polk County, Texas abt. 1853. Elias came with his father-In-law Bartlett Towns. They came from Tallapoosa county, Alabama. I don't have any information on a Richard Gipson who married Mahala Meadows. rlovett@claersail.net ” “ELIAS AND SUSAN TOWNS MEADOWS WERE BURRIED IN THE ABBOT CEMENTARY WHICH IS NORTH OF CORRIGAN, TEXAS ON HWY 287. xi. Early (Richard) Moses Meadows, born 1825, Alabama, died 7 September 1892,Coosa County, Alabama, married Didema Peebles Hogan, born 5 December 1833, on15 DEC 1847 at age 14 years and 10 days in Coosa Co. AL. This record can be found in the County Court Records, Film # 1290263 – 1290267 died 10 November 1912, daughter of Daniel Hogan. Moses Meadows lived in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, in 1850. He lived in Coosa County, Alabama, in 1860, 1870, and 1880.

Successful farmer in Fishpond area. Married Dec 16, 1847 Diadema Peeples Hogan b. 5
DEC 1833 in Montgomery Co., Al when she was only just a few days 14 years old- Had
slaves, many crops, cattle and operated a grist and syrup mill. Large land holdings. Most
noted that his dwellings were well constructed. He loved children and was even tempered,
kind and generous. (Jim Meadows)
1850 part of Autauga was cut off from Coosa Co. Part of Wetumka District
is in Coosa still . There is a Daniel Hogan is in Wetumpka, Autauga, AL born
1805 SC with woman Sarah b 1805. He was NOT Didemie´s father. Her father
Daniel Hogan was born 1791 to 1800 and is in Nixburg, Coosa in the 1840 census
with their 2 children Didema and Alonzo and Martha his wife-- "Patsy"
Martha O.N. Browning born 1 June 1806 who died 3 Feb 1843, d/o John Browning
and Nancy Peebles. Daniel died 2 years before Martha and neither were alive for the 1850 census.

Didema Peebles Hogan was born 5 Dec 1833. On Ancestry.com I see that the name of Martha has been combined with her sister in the Browning family called Didema who married David Peebles on the 10th of Feb. 1833 in Lowndes Co.. Her death as Didema Peebles is recorded 10 Feb 1833 in Lowndes Co., AL in the Browning Bible as 18 September 1835. According to Bible records, Patsy O.N. Browning was Martha´s Bible entry name (Patsy was a nickname for Martha). Martha´s daughter Didemawas named after Martha´s sister Didema Browning. descendants started to call Martha with a middle name of "Didemia."I have no idea how later I have the Bible transcripts from Cindy Stamps. Martha was not a Creek Indian even though her descendants claim that her daughter Didema was REALLY full Creek. Her husband Daniel Hogan´s death is not recorded.

COMMENT: Family history which has come down over the ages from my side of the
family is that Daniel Hogan married Martha "Patsy" O. N. Browning born 1 June
1806 died 3 February 1843 recorded in the John Browning Bible. (See images
under new blogger
http://robert-hardy-sc-to-alabama.blogspot.com/ Martha named
her daughter Didema Peebles Hogan born 5 Dec 1833 after her younger sister
Didema born 28 December 1815.Didema Browning married a cousin David Peebles
in February 1833. Didema´s death 18 September 1835 is recorded with her
married Didema Peebles name. In the 1803 Browning Bible, Martha´s death is
recorded as Martha O. Hogan.Daniel Hogan´s death is not recorded, yet deaths
of husbands of other children are are recorded. Daniel Hogan died on 10 Sept 184o
a few years before Patsy did on 3 February 1843 during a cold winter. See email below:

Susan,
Thanks for sending the material. I am trying to digest it all but am puzzled by what I just scanned over--the references to Didema Hogan Meadows being a Creek Indian. First of all, her parents did not die within the same week. Martha Browning Hogan died several years after
Daniel . There are court papers when she went to court after his death. Daniel died 10 Sept 1840; Martha died 5 Feb 1843. On 7 Dec 1840, the court ordered his estate to be inventoried. George Johnson was appointed administrator; I have no clue as to his identity. Their death dates are hand written in the copy of the Bible pages, which I have--no title page to Bible, and I have no idea who had the original. They were sent to me years ago by my mother's cousin, who has been dead a number
of years. Daniel's estate listed a number of items, as well as 9 slaves, one of whom was the boy, Eldridge, willed to Daniel Hogan by his father, John R. On 8 March 1841, Isaac W. Suttle, who was a local judge I think, was given guardianship of two minors, Wm. Alonzo and Didemia
Hogan. It stated that Martha Hogan had not appeared. George Johnson was given permission to sell Daniel's land, and Isaac Suttle, Stephen Ray, and Robert Hardy were to conduct the sale. Lands were bought by
Martha O. Hogin for $1210.00 on 23 Sept 1841. This was all copied by hand at the Coosa Co. courthouse by our cousin. I was at the courthouse several years ago and found it difficult to find anything--things were sort of unorganized. Anyway, Martha lived for several years after Daniel died. I read somewhere, and I've forgotten where, that the winter when she died was a record cold year and that there were many deaths.

Second, where did the information come from that Daniel was half Creek Indian. I have found nothing in my research to indicate this and would like to pursue it. Daniel was the son of John R. Hogan, who left a slave to his son Daniel in his will. That same slave was named in
Daniel's court papers when Martha Browning Hogan went to court to settle his estate, so I am certain he is the correct one. John R. Hogan was married to Susannah Bradshaw, his first cousin. The Bradshaws, Hogan,
and Robinsons all came together from VA; I don't think there were any Creek Indians in VA in their lines, and I have found no Indian ancestry in the Browning or Peebles lines. I am working with another Hogan researcher,a man named Hogan whose ancestors are there in NC also. He did DNA, as did one of my mother's Hogan cousins, who lives in AR still. We had a very close match, so are
working the VA area. I'm not certain that this Creek ancestry is valid.

There is no evidence that I have ever found that Daniel Hogan's middle name was Alonza. His son was William Alonza, but Daniel is never referred to as anything but Daniel. I have his estate settlement, his father's will, his Bible records, and his son's obit from the Alexander
City newspaper. In everything he is referred to as only Daniel, as was his grandfather who married Elizabeth Robinson. When Martha Browning Hogan died, Charles R. Buckner was appointed guardian of the children for a while, but Wm. Alonza was soon old enough to not need a guardian. Then David Woods Bozeman, brother of Michael Bozeman who married Lucy Browning, Martha's sister, was appointed guardian until she married. I have been to FishPond Cemetery twice and found no evidence of any separation in the cemetery between whites and
native Americans. True, families are buried in clusters, and the Hogans are not buried right up with the Meadows but nearby. Nixburg today is one of those places that if you blink your eyes when passing through,
you will miss it completely.
Cindy (Stamps)

Hogan children´s names are recorded in court papers in Arkansas.

Cindy Stamps found papers in Arkansas but could not find the will.
According to the estate papers there was a will annexed and here is
what Cindy Stamps writes:

"The papers are somewhat hard to read but here is a
partial transcription:
"August 28th AD 1844
This day personally came Nancy Browning before me, James S. Ward, Clerk of
the Circuit Court and En officis Clerk of the Court of Probate in an for the

County of Clark, aforesaid, and, presented letters of Administration with
the will annexed on the estate of John Browning deceased, and David M.
Browning, Francis J. Browning, and William F. Browning, appointed executors
in and by the last will and testament of the said John Browning deceased, to
execute the same, refusing to enter upon the execution of the said last will
and testament. It is therefore on the motion of the said Nancy Browning and
by consent of the said David M. Browning, Francis J. Browning, and William
F. Browning, ordered by me James S. Ward...that letters of
Administration...is hereby granted to the said Nancy Browning."

"Now the above does not name the men as sons but later in the papers John
Browning's heirs
are listed :
1. Elizabeth Grady (don't know who Elizabeth's third husband was)
2. Nathan P. Browning
3. David M. Browning
4. Francis J. Browning
5. William F. Browning
6. Nancy Bankston (Nancy Browning Hardy Bankston, widow of Robert Hardy, wife of James Madison Bankston as of
11 Jan 1846, Coosa Co., AL)
7. Alonza Hogan and Diadema Hogan (children of Martha "Patsy" O. N. Browning and Daniel Hogan, both deceased and buried in Coosa Co., AL)
8. Mary Graham (“Polly”wife of Samuel NeSmith Graham, Montgomery Co. and Butler Co.,AL-is this Polly M. Browning or Mary Didema Peebles? a grand daughter)
9. Lucy Ann Bozeman and Michael Bozeman (of Clark County, AR) "

xii. Elizabeth Meadows, born April 1827 AL, married 1st 24 June 1844 in Tallapoosa AL by Simson Goolsby clerk to John B. Hardy b 1825 Edgefield SC, son of Robert Hardy and Nancy Peebles Browning of Nixburg, Coosa AL, They had Robert R. Hardy born 1845 who died by 1900 census but in 1910 Elizabeth says he is still living-was she demented? or did he disappear for years and suddenly turn up? John B. Hardy died 1865-1868 according to family notes. 2nd marriage Elizabeth married James Madison Bankston b. 1815 Spartanburg SC. He was the son of Joseph and Agnes Bankston of Spartanburg SC who lived at Fishpond, Tallapoosa near Ransom Meadows. James Madison Bankston had been married to Elizabeth´s 1st husband´s mother -Nancy Peebles Browning Hardy who had had one child by him: Nancy Browning Bankston who married Ransom Meadows Dick who was a grandchild of Ransom Meadows. James M. Bankston may have divorced Nancy in order to marry Elizabeth, or he may have waited till Nancy P. Browning Hardy Bankston died on March 30, 1870. They appear together as man and wife in June of 1870 Shelby census. In 1900 Elizabeth Jane Meadows Hardy Bankston claims to have been married 35 years which means they married 1865--maybe right after John B. Hardy died. That means he and Nancy had divourced and that would be the reason the children did not put "Nancy Bankston" on her grave, but "Nancy B. Hardy." I wish somebody would look for papers concerning her property in Coosa.

I am pasting in this picture of Oak Grove School students at this spot because Gracie Meadows is in the group and she belongs to Ransom Meadows´grandson Ransom Meadows. So she is Ransom´s great grand daughter. Gracie was born 1898 and I am not sure how old she looks. I would say the foto might have been taken before 1910. Notice the children with no shoes.
